A leftover stump is a trip hazard, a mower obstacle and a home for carpenter ants. Grinding is the fastest way to get rid of one without digging up half your yard.
Call for a free estimateA grinder with a spinning toothed wheel chews the stump into wood chips, usually 6–12 inches below the soil. Larger surface roots can be ground out too. Most single stumps take under an hour.
Grinding leaves the deep roots to rot in place, which is fine for lawns and garden beds. If you are building, pouring concrete or putting in a foundation, ask about full stump and root ball removal with an excavator.
The chips can stay as mulch or be hauled away. If you plan to lay sod or replant in the same spot, remove most of the chips and fill the hole with topsoil.
When added to a tree removal, grinding often runs $100–$400 per stump, depending on diameter and access. Ask for a per-stump price if you have several.
